These products are a great way to introduce your learner to games that are more structured and rule-based. They are fun and engaging, while also introducing turn-taking, waiting, and the concept of respecting others. These are simple games with few rules, and can be adjusted to your learner’s abilities.
I like to use these games for:
*introducing the idea of gameplay with rules
*learners with siblings/other learners in the household as a group activity
*learners who need encouragement to play with others
Skills that can be targeted:
*Turn-taking
*Waiting
*Fair play
*Sharing and working together
*Other interaction skills/social skills (based on your learner)
I have personally used each of these games many times. I would recommend beginning with Hungry, Hungry Hippos if your goal is to introduce your student to tabletop games, because it doesn’t involve turn-taking. Pop-Up Pirate, Crocodile Dentist, and Connect 4 (with rule modifications) are perfect for introducing turn-taking as a skill. Candyland and Chutes and Ladders are simple tabletop games that don’t require reading to play and are great for all ages.
